Several members of the Austin Peay State University Honors Program and President's Emerging Leaders Program (PELP) traveled to East Tennessee State University earlier this month to present their research and expertise at the Tennessee Collegiate Honors Council (TCHC) annual meeting. During this year's meeting, three students presented their work, and Dr. Tim Winters, director of the APSU Honors and PELP programs, was elected the new TCHC president. The students and the topics they presented included: Mara Howell, a sophomore business major and honors student, "The Digital Divide: The Foot on Rural America's Neck." Zoe Huffman, a freshman English major and Honors and PELP student, "Gender Inequality around the World." Jessica White, a sophomore English major and Honors and PELP student, "Psychopathy vs. Sociopathy in the works of Edgar Allan Poe." "Our students did a fantastic job, and I am very proud of them," Winters said. And now that he is president, Austin Peay will host the TCHC meeting in the spring of 2023. Jacob Knight, reigning APSU Homecoming King, is a senior and a stalwart member of the President's Emerging Leaders Program. Jacob takes on numerous roles around the Honors Commons, including being my Peer Leader for PELP 1000 this term. He has now also taken the lead position to coordinate the annual PELP/Honors Formal Dance to be held in the spring. Coordinating this event involves a great deal of time and effort, and I am especially grateful to Jacob for serving as a mentor for the under-class members of what it means to be a leader 24/7. in addition to participating in PELP as a senior student and being my peer leader, Jacob is also a member of the Governor's Own Marching Band. Three levels of certification has been established. Level 1 - Certified Mentor; Level 2 - Advanced Certified Mentor; Level 3 - Master Certified Mentor. The Senior Peer Leader is an elite position for the Peer Leader Program that provides opportunities for students to guide, educate, and support students in academic success at Austin Peay State University. Senior Peer Leaders not only have a section of APSU 1000 or PASS 0900 to support but also a team of Peer Leaders. They serve as a guide and support when they are facing challenges in their positions. Additionally, the Senior Peer Leaders hold regular office hours in the student success area to assist with program facilitation, marketing, and Peer Leader recruitment. Senior Peer Leaders have the opportunity to explore their own leadership potential, learn techniques about facilitating dialogue, and developing skills for mentoring both inside and outside of the classroom. Senior Peer Leaders are chosen through a process of training and education by successfully completing at least one year as a Peer Leader. Candidates are interviewed and chosen based on leadership skills and abilities demonstrated throughout their time as a Peer Leader.
